Sun in Aries, Pluto retrograde
in Sagittarius. March 20th 2002, 19.16 GMT
The chart above is a snapshot
of the moment when the Sun entered Aries at 19.16 GMT on March
20th 2002. This moment marks, for the northern hemisphere,
the Spring Equinox...equinox being Latin for "equal night"
meaning that day and night, darkness and light, are perfectly
equal. In the northern hemisphere this is the moment from
which we move into growth and increasing warmth, when winter
hibernation is over, the sap rises, birds sing, leaves sprout
and new life is all around. It is a moment of perfect balance,
as we move from darkness into light.
This gives some idea of the
spirit behind Aries. In Pisces the Sun was at the end of a
cycle. Pisces energy is deep and mysterious, reflective, immersing
one in the vast ocean of communal spirit and the collective
whole. In Pisces we dream and look towards the eternal. Aries
energy is young, direct, thrusting, full of life, looking
forward with eager anticipation to the future. In ancient
times this time was the important start to everything in the
year. Nowadays its importance is still recognized by Hindus,
for the Hindu New Year starts on the day after the New Moon
on or after the Spring Equinox.
Apparent coincidences, more
often than not, are a sign to us of something significant.
For Pluto to turn retrograde so very close to the moment when
the Sun moves into Aries is a poignant reminder of our mythological
roots. Pluto, the god of the underworld, released Persephone
back to her mother Demeter at the beginning of Spring, and
this moment is also the pagan origins of the season called
after the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, from which comes the
symbolism of the egg at Easter.
"As above, so below."
This moment in the heavens, illustrated in the chart above,
sets the scene for the following weeks and months. The world
may well be preoccupied with power and power struggles in
all forms. Such strong Aries energy implies the use of military
force, and Jupiter in Cancer is defensive and protective,
putting the emphasis on religious zeal.
In our own lives we can make
good use of this season by beginning projects, making changes,
using our imagination and enthusiasm, and setting out to discover
what is new. Pluto so close to the South Node suggests that
old issues are likely to be part of the general picture for
the world and for each of us. Perhaps we're being given a
chance to look at these outgrown situations, present in everybody's
life, and make the necessary changes and then move forward
onto better things.
Looking ahead, putting old
hang-ups and ways of thinking and doing behind us is the way
to make the best use of this combination of forward-looking
Aries spring themes and the resurgence of hidden and unconscious
forces represented by Pluto. To this end you might like to
